A Surprise

"I'll get it, Phine!" The purple-haired girl skipped towards the door to their small apartment. Dauphine, known as Phine by her sister and roommate, stared at the door, wondering what could possibly behind it. There was the telemarketers, rent collector, and the occasional neighbor asking for salt or a cup of sugar, something along those lines, but this time there was something looming over them. She could just feel it. As she stopped her paper for school, she followed her sister towards the door. In front of them were two faces she thought she'd recognized, but she couldn't quite put her finger on them.

"Calypso?" the woman asked, staring at the purple one's face.

"Dauphine?" asked the man who put a hand on her cheek. 

"Oh, it is you two!!" The woman rejoiced and pulled Callie into a hug. Dauphine stared back at them. No, this couldn't be... "Did you miss us, sweeties? We sure missed you!"

"We really did, little pearls." the man continued stroking her cheek as Dauphine pulled herself away.

"Mom... Dad?" Callie pondered as she ran into the couple to give a hug. Her sister, however, was less than pleased with their arrival. 

"So... where's the apology?" the older daughter barked, pulling her sister away from them.

"For what, Callie?" Their father asked, approaching the sink to get himself some water.

"It's Dauphine. And how about apologizing for abandoning us at 5? Leaving us in the care of a corrupt independent foster care system?" 

"Please, it wouldn't have been that bad." The mother smirked, "there were plenty of other people like you who could have taken care of you..."

Dauphine scoffed and lifted her shirt up, showing them the scars and bruises that were borne upon her. As soon as the air hit her skin, water hit her bruises. She let out a scream as she collapsed to the floor. Her legs had merged into a small tail. "Leave..."

"Why should we?"

"Your previously mentioned charges. You not even bothering to remember our names..."

"How dare you speak to your father that way!" The man shouted and slapped her face. "We'd might as well leave, after being around such impudent children. Come, Constance..." The man took his wife's hand and left the apartment.
